COSCO to
start direct Piraeus calls

COSCO
Container Line (COSCON) is to start making regular weekly calls at Piraeus on
the Asia/Mediterranean Express (AMX) service,
which is
operated as part of the CKYH Alliance network The AMX runs with 8 x 5,440 teu
COSCO-operated vessels and the first new call at Piraeus
is
scheduled to be made by the 5,446 teu Cosco Shanghai on April 6th.
The new
port rotation for the AMX service will be : Shanghai, Ningbo, Hong Kong,
Shekou, Singapore, Port Said, Piraeus, Naples, Genoa,
Barcelona,
Valencia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Shanghai.
Back in
October 2008, COSCO terminal operating/investment arm, COSCO Pacific Ltd signed
an agreement with the Piraeus Port Authority to
invest
Euro 4.3bn in managing and upgrading two container Handling wharfs in Piraeus
under a 35 year concession period. As has been reported,
plans by
the Greek government to private the port sector have led to a series of strikes
by the local workforce, resulting in Piraeus being dropped by
a number
container lines which had made regular calls at the port
